“It is not stress that kills us, its our reaction to it..”
Hans Seyle

By now, you are well under way in semester one. Things are beginning to get tough again. You are beginning to have that sinking feeling in your stomach, and you don’t think you’ll be able to continue on. I know things are difficult right now, but you have to KEEP GOING. Continue to push on your path to excellence, and remember the bigger purpose of why you are there. I have been doing some research on how individuals get past these feelings. I know these feelings can be isolating, but you aren’t the only one feeling this way. See some words below from someone who was able to push through all those feelings of uncertainty:

“My first year was very challenging – socially, emotionally, and mentally. It was the first time in my life when I felt like an outsider – I often questioned my intelligence and felt embarrassed about my humble background. I overcame these insecurities by focusing on my academics and learning how to navigate the support systems on campus (professors, fellow classmates, counselors, etc.), and by becoming allies with a few students who shared a similar experience.”
– Ilyan Nuñez, Director of College & Career Placement, KIPP New Jersey (Drew University)

Take the words written above to heart and follow the solutions. As always I am here to support you on your path. If you’re concerned about your future, your life at this moment, or have any extra questions, concerns, or want to create a plan for the future, please reach out.

You are always part of the JRLA family,

Ms. Grow

 Alumni Spotlight- October 2017:

The alumni spotlight this month highlights someone who understands the value of perseverance, Devonique Rogers! She had a difficult time academically her first semester in college. She was struggled through the rigor, but she knew she belonged on a college campus and did not give up. During spring semester, she came back determined. She put all her effort into school, and she earned an entire point and a half GPA above her previous one. She even was able to push through while working a job! Devonique is a great example of dedication towards a goal. Nice work, Devonique!

Scholly- This is a website for scholarship support. It does cost a monthly fee of $3, but it seems worth it. Here’s a brief intro from the Scholly team: “College is expensive, like really expensive. We know this. In fact, most of our team is just a few years removed (and a couple of us are still working on graduating). That’s why we created Scholly. If you're a high school senior, current undergraduate, or graduate student in the U.S., or an international student coming to study in the U.S., our patented scholarship-matching platform will help you find free money for college by delivering a smarter, targeted list of scholarships that are uniquely suited to you.”
